House building involves a document, with the many regulations, for almost each part of the house now. NZS: 3604 for how the house is constructed. Standards for the different types of masonry, steel works, and ground works.
We take in all of this information in many ways:
· By reading the documents ourselves
· By asking someone who knows the regulations e.g. council inspectors, who normally claim to know everything to do with house building
· Through various websites
· At the ongoing builders meetings and conferences
· Through on site experiences

Through reading building documents ourselves, we can gain an understanding of what’s being said by storing the information first handed. What is meant by this is that the information will be very accurate; it will not be tampered with in any way as other sources can be.
Problems that could arise include you mis-interpreting what is being said. This is a common mistake and can be fixed just as easily; just go ask someone for what is the right way, or go back to your source. The information could also be out of date, and as the construction industry grows, so does the documentation. So when picking something to read, ensure it is fairly recent.

Learning about regulations in documents through various sources is a good way to remember things in different way. However you do need to ensure the information is correct.
Information passed on by word of mouth always tends to change with each person it goes through. Council inspectors would be excellent people to speak to about building documents as they are surrounded by them every day.
Word passed on through three builders, a plumber and an electrician would be less worthy. One, the information is likely to have changed several times as it was told. And two, the plumber and electrician wouldn’t know jack about what the builder needs to know. Something that needs 150mm bolts has suddenly changed to 80mm bolts. Not the most reliable of all communication with documentation.

Then there is the modern way to information that everybody uses the internet. This source of information can be both good and bad. As it is the internet and access is very easy these days, its information can be updated almost daily. On the downside though, as it is very easy to access, the information could be false, a fraud. What is meant by this is that the cyber net world is open to everyone that anything can be put on it. So when looking for information, use well recommended sites, or sites that don’t end with “.com”.
